Sentence-ending Particles: か, の, な, ね and よ

Sentence-ending particles play an important role in Japanese because they can change the meaning or nuance of a sentence quite significantly.

They can express questions, confirmation, prohibition, admiration, wonder, wishes, and much more.

Let’s take a look!

~か【Questions】

You may already know this one!

The particle is commonly used at the end of a sentence to make it into a question.

Verb (ます-form) + か

For example:

N3の教科書きょうかしょっています? Do you have an N3 textbook?

週末しゅうまつなにをします? What are you doing this weekend?

As you can see, is used with polite sentences (the ます form). In this case, the question mark is optional.

To ask the same questions casually, you can say:

N3の教科書、持ってる? Do you have an N3 textbook?

週末は何する? What are you doing this weekend?

Note: In casual speech, the particle is often omitted.

~の【Informal questions】

The particle can also be used to ask questions. Unlike , it is used to make informal questions.

Verb (plain form) + の?

For example:

いまなにしてる? What are you doing now?

どこへ? Where are you going?

週末しゅうまつなにする? What are you doing this weekend?

それ、べない? Aren’t you going to eat that?

Notice the slight difference between these two sentences:

週末は何するの?
What are you doing this weekend?
(Asking about the listener’s plans.)

週末は何する?
What are you doing this weekend? or What shall we do this weekend?
(This can mean either, depending on the context.)

~な【Warnings and prohibitions】

The sentence-ending particle is used to give warnings or prohibit someone from doing something.

Verb (dictionary form) + な

For example:

踏切ふみきりをくぐる! Don’t go through the level crossing!

さけんだらくるま運転うんてんする!Don’t drive after drinking alcohol!

授業中じゅぎょうちゅう! Don’t sleep during class!

〜ね【Confirmation】

The particle is used to seek confirmation or agreement. It is similar to saying “isn’t it?,” “right?,” or “OK?” in English.

Verb / adjective / noun + ね

For example:

午後ごご1電車でんしゃ。(Polite: 午後1時の電車に乗ります。)I will catch the 1 pm train, OK?

このピザ、美味おいしい。(Polite: このピザ、美味しいです。)This pizza is delicious, isn’t it?

いい天気てんき。(Polite: いい天気です。)It’s nice weather, isn’t it?

~よ【Giving new information】

The particle is used when giving the listener new information or emphasising something you want them to know.

Verb + よ

い-adjective + よ

な-adjective だ + よ

For example:

午後ごご1電車でんしゃ。(Polite: 午後1時の電車に乗ります。)I’ll be on the 1pm train.

このピザ、美味おいしい。(Polite: このピザ、美味しいです。)This pizza is delicious.

いい天気てんき。(Polite: いい天気です。)It’s nice weather.

~なぁ/~なー【Admiration, wonder, and wishes】

Now let’s look at another use of .

This is different from the one used for prohibition. It expresses admiration, wonder, or a wish.

Usually, the vowel is lengthened (なぁ or なー) to sound more natural.

Verb (たい-form) + なぁ → wish

Verb / adjective / noun + かな → wonder

い-adjective + なぁ → admiration

な-adjective + だなぁ → admiration

For example:

今日きょうさむなぁ。Ah, it’s cold today.

あのひと綺麗きれいなぁ。Wow, that person is beautiful.

明日あしたあめ。wonder if it will rain tomorrow.

はや日本にほんきたいなー。I wish I could go to Japan soon.
