Particle に

The particle に describes various meanings depending on the predicate.

Place, spot, location, reaching point (at, in, on, into)

私わたしの弟おとうとは沖縄おきなわに住すんでいます。
/watashi no otooto wa okinawa ni sunde imasu/
My younger brother lives in Okinawa.

庭にわに犬いぬが二匹にひきいます。
/niwa ni inu ga nihiki imasu/
There are two dogs in the garden.

今いま、空港くうこうに着ついたところです。
/ima, kuukoo ni tsuita tokoro desu/
I have just arrived at the airport.

顔かおに何なにか付ついていますよ！
/kao ni nanika tsuite imasu yo/
You’ve got something on your face!

駐車場ちゅうしゃじょうに車くるまを止とめてください。
/chuushajoo ni kuruma o tomete kudasai/
Please park your car in the car park.

今いまどこにいますか？
/ima doko ni imasu ka/
Where are you now?

8:30の電車でんしゃに乗のります。
/hachiji han no densha ni norimasu/
I will take a train at 8:30.

次つぎの角かどを左ひだりに曲まがると銀行ぎんこうがありますよ。
/tsugi no kado o hidari ni magaru to ginkoo ga arimasu yo/
There is a bank when you turn left at the next corner.

これをそこのゴミ箱ばこに捨すててくれますか。
/kore o soko no gomibako ni sutete kuremasu ka/
Would you mind throwing this in the bin there?

Destination, direction (to, toward, for, at)

来年らいねん日本にほんに行いく予定よていです。
/rainen nihon ni iku yotee desu/
I am planning to go to Japan next year.

仕事しごとが終おわったのでうちに帰かえります。
/shigoto ga owatta node uchi ni kaerimasu/
I am going home as I got my job done.

駅に向かって歩いているところです。
/eki ni mukatte aruiteiru tokoro desu/
I am now walking towards the station.

Time reference (at, in, on, during)

今朝けさは6時ろくじに起おきました。
/kesa wa rokuji ni okimashita/
I woke up at 6 this morning.

来週らいしゅうの木曜日もくようびに会あいましょう。
/raishuu no mokuyoobi ni aimashou/
Let’s meet up next Thursday.

去年きょねんの夏休なつやすみに初はじめて日本にほんに行いきました。
/kyonen no natsuyasumi ni hajimete nihon ni ikimashita/
I went to Japan for the first time during the summer holiday last year.

*に is attached to the absolute time reference such as 6 o’clock, year 2024, or September. When describing the time references that change depending on when “NOW” is, no particle is accompanied (e.g. today, next week, last year, etc.).

Purpose (to do, for)

今夜こんやレストランに食たべに行いかない？
/konya resutoran ni tabe ni ikanai/
Why don’t we eat out at a restaurant this evening?

映画えいがを観みに行いきませんか？
/eiga o mi ni ikimasen ka/
Why don’t we go watch a film?

忘わすれ物ものをしたので家いえに取とりに帰かえります。
/wasuremono o shita node ie ni tori ni kaerimasu/
I forgot to bring something so will go home to pick it up.

*Verb stem of MASU-form + に + verb

に + mental activity

北欧ほくおうの生活せいかつに憧あこがれがあります。
/hokuoo no seikatsu ni akogare ga arimasu/
I have a longing for Scandinavian life.

試合結果しあいけっかに満足まんぞくしていません。
/shiai kekka ni manzoku shite imasen/
I am not satisfied with the outcome of the match.

JLPTの勉強べんきょうに飽あきたので、ちょっとゲームをします。
/jee-eru-pii-tii no benkyoo ni akita node, chotto geemu o shimasu/
I’m bored of studying for the JLPT, so I’m going to play a little video game.

Cause (with, from, for)

その話はなしを聞きいて、あまりの嬉うれしさに泣ないてしまいました。
/sono hanashi o kiite amarino ureshisa ni naite shimai mashita/
I cried because I was so happy to hear that story.

もう5年ごねんも腰痛ようつうに苦くるしんでいます。
/moo gonen mo yootsuu ni kurushinde imasu/
I’ve been suffering from back pain for 5 years already.

子猫こねこたちは恐怖きょうふに震ふるえていました。
/koneko tachi wa kyoofu ni furuete imashita/
The kittens were shaking from fear.

Result of change (to, into)

水みずが氷こおりに変かわりました。
/mizu ga koori ni kawari mashita/
Water changed into ice.

コーヒー豆まめを挽ひいて粉こなにしました。
/koohiimame o hiite kona ni shimashita/
I ground the coffee beans to make powder.

その少年しょうねんは7歳ななさいでプロのピアニストになった。
/sono shoonen wa nanasai de puro no pianisuto ni natta/
That boy became a professional pianist at the age of 7.

スマホをAndroidからiPhoneに変かえました。
/sumaho o andoroido kara aifon ni kaemashita/
I changed my smartphone from Android to iPhone.

Proportion (a, in, every, for)

彼かれは週しゅうに2回にかいヨガのレッスンを受うけています。
/kare wa shuu ni nikai yoga no ressun o ukete imasu/
He is taking yoga lessons twice a week.

私わたしの会社かいしゃでは5人ごにんに1人ひとりが在宅勤務ざいたくきんむをしています。
/watashi no kaisha de wa gonin ni hitori ga zaitaku kinmu o shiteimasu/
In my company, one of every 5 people works from home.

年ねんに1、2回かい実家じっかに帰かえります。
/nen ni ichi nikai jikka ni kaerimasu/
I go back to my parent’s house once or twice every year.

Object of the action (to, for)

道みちゆく人々ひとびとにインタビューをしています。
/michiyuku hitobito ni intabyuu o shite imasu/
I am interviewing people on the street.

授業じゅぎょうで分わからなかったところを先生せんせいに質問しつもんした。
/jugyoo de wakaranakatta tokoro o sensei ni shitsumon shita/
I asked the teacher questions about what I didn’t understand in class.

あの上司じょうしは部下ぶかにとても厳きびしい。
/ano jooshi wa buka ni totemo kibishii/
That boss is very strict with his subordinates.

彼かれにチョコレートを渡わたしたい。
/kare ni chokoreeto o watashitai/
I wanna give him chocolate.

お母かあさんにアマゾンの荷物にもつが届とどいてるよ。
/okaasan ni amazon no nimotsu ga todoiteru yo/
Mum, you’ve got something from Amazon.

子供こどもにご飯はんを作つくりました。
/kodomo ni gohan o tsurimashita/
I cooked for my child.

私わたしも田中たなかさんの意見いけんに賛成さんせいです。
/watashi mo tanaka-san no iken ni sansei desu/
I agree with Tanaka-san as well.

Performer of the action (by, from)

おじいちゃんに戦争せんそうの話はなしを聞ききました。
/ojiichan ni sensoo no hanashi o kikimashita/
I heard the story about the war from my grandpa.

道みちで誰だれかに声こえをかけられました。
/michi de dareka ni koe o kakerare mashita/
I was stopped by someone on the street.

犬いぬに噛かまれた。
/inu ni kamareta/
I got bitten by a dog.
