【Sailor Moon】My Childhood Idols

Culture

Hello everyone!

A while back, my friend and I visited the Sailor Moon Exhibition at the Roppongi Museum, held from 1st July to 30th December, 2022, and organised into Volumes 1, 2, and 3. We explored Volume 2.

Marking 30 years since the Sailor Moon series debuted, this exhibition was a nostalgic journey for me, as the anime was a cornerstone of my childhood.

The exhibition opened with an immersive theatre featuring evocative images and nostalgic music, followed by a hologram display, original drawings, manuscripts, storyboards, merchandise, vintage game consoles, musical costumes, and other memorabilia. Every corner sparked childhood memories, filling me with excitement!

I’ve always been a huge fan of Sailor Venus. As a kid, I’d style my hair in a half-up look to mimic hers and admired her iconic heeled shoes with straps, though I never owned a pair. Back then, most of my friends were fans of Jupiter or Sailor Moon, so finding a fellow Venus enthusiast to attend the exhibition with was a delight! Seeing images of Minako-chan together was a highlight.

As a child, I didn’t analyse why Sailor Moon captivated me—it was simply cute, beautiful, cool, stylish, sparkly, and colourful. Young me was enchanted by it all. Now, as an adult revisiting the series, I see Sailor Moon as the essence of “girl power.” The characters’ strength, bravery, and unity as they face their enemies are inspiring and beautiful. Each Sailor Scout has a distinct personality, and their harmony is truly special.

As I grew older, I watched Sailor Moon less frequently and never finished the series. I also haven’t fully read the original manga. This exhibition inspired me to dive back into the original story and rediscover its magic.
